Madhubani painting is said to have developed in the ancient city of Mithila, the birthplace of Sita. Some of the initial references to the Madhubani painting can be found in the epic Ramayana In the Treta Yuga, King Janaka was the ruler of Mithila. It is believed that on the occasion of the marriage of his daughter Sita to Lord Rama, he ordered to paint the walls of the kingdom through paintings. These paintings were later known as Mithila paintings. The knowledge was passed down from generation to generation and the paintings began to adorn the houses of the region. The women of the village practiced these paintings on the wall. So they are also called as Bhitti chitra. Madhubani painting is one of the many famous Indian art forms. As it is practiced in the Mithila region of Bihar and Nepal, it is called Mithila or Madhubani art.
In the present context, the Madhubani painting tradition was discovered by William G. Archer, a British colonial officer of the Madhubani district in 1934, when a massive earthquake hit Bihar, he chanced upon these paintings on the interior walls of the houses.
These paintings are known for representing ritual content for particular occasions, including festivals, religious rituals, etc. colors used in Madhubani paintings are usually derived from plants and other natural sources. These colors were often bright and pigmented. Instead of contemporary brushes, objects like twigs, matchsticks, and even fingers were used to create the paintings.
Due to the growing demand for this art form, the canvases of Madhubani art rapidly shifted from mud walls to paper, fabric, wood, handmade paper, and even ceramics. The acrylic paints replaced natural colors, the pen nibs replaced plant twigs or bamboo for painting.
